Fur Blankets Q&A
What is the advantage of real fur over synthetic alternatives?
The advantage is that it is something that is organic and once its useful life is over and its discarded what could be more green than returning the animal to the earth, as opposed to the nylon petro chemical that takes many thousands of years to disinigrate.
Many people have objections to using fur, how do you view the use of fur from an ethical prospective?
The use of fur from an ethical perspective is it should be animals taken during regulated seasons set by state or provincial wildlife agencies that manage those species for the benefit of the species, not necessarily the individual animal. Those are the animals that we use, animals that are plentiful and if animals are managed, using hunting and trapping seasons to manage those species, again good ethics dictate that we use them to the best of our ability. They provide a beautiful, warm, soft product.
What practical benefits does real fur offer over a traditional blanket?
Real fur is warmer than a traditional blanket, it evolved over millions of years to protect and keep the animal warm while it is alive and it has a thick dense under fur that nature designed to keep warmth in. It's inherently warmer than man made products.
What types of animals are good to make fur blankets, coats etc. out of?
The best types of animals come from a northern climate because they are thicker plus are denser and provide more warmth than any animal that comes from a southern climate. Also, anything that is taken under a scientific, well managed, regulated program, administered by the state wild life agency. All we sell is animals that our taken from those types of programs.
What is the process that goes into making a fur usable?
The best furs come from animals harvested in the dead of winter because they are the most prime and have the warmest coats. Some of the best fur handlers are the native people in Canada and most of our furs come from Canada, Alaska and the Rocky Mountains. It has to be handled, fleshed, stretched and properly handled so that it tans properly, we send them to the fur dressers, i.e. tanners that turn that skin into good quality leather and bring out the soft and the shine of the fur. They then send the dressed (tanned) skin back to us.
When you get a tanned skin whets the process of making that into a blanket?
It requires careful matching of different skins that are matched for color softness or texture and they all need to have similar properties. Then they are cut to whatever pattern is being used and extremely skilled sewers have to attach those skins. It is then line with whatever fabric is chosen.
What are the different qualities in fur that one looks for?
The best qualities in fur come from winter primed animals. They go through a process, especially wild animals, in the summer animals they have a very thin short coat with no under fur and it grows out to provide density and the guard hairs protect the under fur and there are different levels of primness with the very best animals being from the middle of winter. Summer skins are of little or no value, passed prime skins like late winter or early spring on most species are of little or no value, they just don't have the softness, luster, and the density that mid winter fully primed skins have.
What are the different grading systems or qualities of fur that are out there?
Each species has many different grades. Size, color, fur quality, different degrees of damage to the skin, singe caused by sunlight, it takes a very skilled grader to separate all the grades of quality. That is what years of experience have taught me.
What quality of fur does trailside traditions work with?
We use only the top 10% of quality out there. The reason that we are able to do that is that we remarket, we buy skins directly from trappers and hunters and fur farmers and resell the majority to manufacturing furriers, overseas, and in Canada and are able to utilize the small percentage of the best quality for ourselves. In other words we have the ability to pick the finest skins and not just say that we use the finest skins.
What different animals does trailside tradition work with?
In the wild fur we use beaver in the natural and the sheared, coyote, red fox, grey fox, muskrat, mink and also various ranched mink and fox in different colors. Principally, the skins that are taken during regulated hunting and trapping seasons.
What kinds of animals can be ethically taken for their fur?
Any species that have regulated seasons established by state or provincial wildlife agencies. They have seasons because they are plentiful enough to be managed or allow some sort of take. If we are going to manage a species for the benefit of their species or control their numbers for the benefit of that species and we are going to use lethal means to control populations, again, good ethics say we should utilize them to the best of our ability.
Given that trailside traditions makes all of its products in house, what's the process of getting item ready for wholesale?
We have a process of inspection, through every step, whether it is matching the skins, inspecting the sewing, the grading process, lining the items, or cleaning them up for wholesale or retail. Every item is inspected after it's done.
